KL Gateway Mall has become a premier venue for major chess tournaments in Malaysia, hosting several high-profile FIDE-rated events throughout the year.
21st Malaysian Chess Festival (2026)
The highlight of the mall's chess calendar is the 21st Malaysian Chess Festival, scheduled for 28th August β 6th September 2026. Organized by the Dato' Arthur Tan Chess Centre with endorsement from the Malaysian Chess Federation, the festival features nine separate tournaments catering to players of all ages and skill levels:
- SMS DEEN Merdeka Open Rapid Team Championship (28β29 Aug): A 9-round rapid team event with RM 18,000 in prizes.
- DTCN Merdeka Junior (U-12) Team Championship (28β29 Aug): A rapid team event for young players with RM 9,000 in prizes.
- Merdeka Blitz Chess Championship (29 Aug): A fast-paced blitz tournament with RM 2,500 in prizes.
- DTCN Age-Group Championship (30 Aug): Categories from Under-06 to Under-16.
- 21st Dato' Arthur Tan Merdeka Open Championship (31 Aug β 6 Sep): The flagship 9-round standard tournament with RM 55,000 in prizes.
- Daniel Yong Chen-I Memorial Challenge (31 Aug β 6 Sep): For players rated below FIDE 2000, with RM 15,000 in prizes.
- DTCN International Seniors' Open (31 Aug β 6 Sep): For players aged 50+ (45+ for women), with RM 12,000 in prizes.
- DTCN Merdeka Day Age Group (3 Sep): Open and age group categories for juniors.
